Medicare Inpatient Hospitals by Service and Provider

Last month we published an application allowing users to explore total payment amount and total covered charges, amongst other metrics, between various medicare providers.

This week’s application helps you understand average covered charges and average total payments, as well as other metrics, for different procedures carried out by more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals that received IPPS (Inpatient Prospective Payment System) payments in the United States.

What's more, it also integrates OpenAI-generated explanations that help interpret and explain the currently selected metric and its related distributions. (Please note that this feature requires you to enter your OpenAI API token the first time you use it.)

You can sort and filter any column straight from the data table and you will also find that the "Procedure" and "Provider Name" columns are pinned so that you can easily scroll through the different metrics.

Using the let menu, you can open the Geo Map and then easily narrow down your results to a specific state and select a specific provider. You can also use the Metrics dropdown located above the map to assist you. The circles representing the providers will change in color and size depending on the metric selected, giving instant visual feedback - The Heat Map can also be used in the same fashion.

Also, if you want to see how a specific hospital compares nation-wide and within its state for a specific procedure (e.g. Heart Transplants), simply select that hospital and procedure to visualize the national and state frequency distributions for all metrics and where your provider stands within that distribution.

You can access this app live at https://chartfactor.com/medicare-ip-svc-prov-2021/. We created it using our ChartFactor Studio software and made sure to give it our own special look and feel as well!

For our data engine we used OpenSearch while the base map tiles were provided by OpenStreetMap.
